A few days ago I decided to render and finish a sketch that has been sitting in SAI since January. It’s a fanart of Claire from the book Son, the fourth and final book in The Giver Quartet by Lois Lowry.
I must say the first book (The Giver) is still the best among the four. Although I loved Matty from The Messenger dearly (and obviously he was well-loved even by the characters, and I presume the author and the fans, he’s been called to memory a handful of times in Son), I think the series went downwards in terms of story and buildup. The Giver instantly became a personal favorite when I read it and it feels a little disappointing to have to admit that the whole series seemed to end in a hurried and mediocre way.
Son is about an ordinary girl named Claire who, surprise surprise, lived in and during Jonas’ childhood world. I’d rather not spoil the fun and I’ll let the Giver readers take a guess.
Albeit dragging often times, Son tried to give what the Giver readers might have asked for – the pre (where did the baby come from?) and aft (where did Jonas go and what happened to the baby?) of The Giver world. I’ll give props to the author for that.
Anyway, here’s a brief process animation for Water Claire:
And the final image. VOILA! Still a little rough and messy, and I wanted a different background. There’s definitely a long way to go and more practice to do.
